Shocking Closure: Unauthorized Medical Institute Sealed in Kokrajhar Over Grave Compliance Violations
KOKRAJHAR: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical & Paramedical Institute Sealed for Operating Illegally
The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical & Paramedical Institute in Kokrajhar was sealed by district authorities on January 20 for operating without the necessary permissions and regulatory approvals. The enforcement action, led by Executive Magistrate Dhrubajyoti Das and Kokrajhar Police Station personnel, targeted illegal health science institutions in Assam.
Under government regulations, institutions offering courses in health sciences, such as pharmacy and nursing, must secure licenses from Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS). Notification No. MER 307386/2, effective June 6, 2023, mandates private universities and institutions to obtain SSUHS affiliation to operate legally in Assam. The sealing of the institute aims to ensure compliance with educational norms and prevent students from obtaining potentially worthless degrees.
In a related development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) uncovered a massive fake degree scam at CMJ University in Shillong. In December 2024, searches at the university and homes of Chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha and family revealed evidence of 20,570 fake degrees issued, defrauding students and laundering Rs. 83.52 crore. The ED froze Rs. 1.53 crore and attached properties worth Rs. 48.76 crore. This investigation follows a 2013 dissolution order by the Governor of Meghalaya, with legal proceedings still ongoing.
These actions reflect a reinforced crackdown on unrecognized educational institutions, safeguarding the credibility of health science education and protecting students from fraudulent practices.
