Governor Celebrates Landmark Elaka and Lineage Acts at Inspiring Mass Congregation
In a landmark gathering titled ‘Dorbar Iktiar Paidbah,’ held in Shillong at the Polo Grounds, influential leaders and stakeholders from the Khasi Hills region convened to deliberate on significant legislative changes enacted through the Administration of Elaka Amendment Act 2023 and the Khasi Social Custom of Lineage Amendment Act 2023. The meet was an unprecedented assembly that saw participation from clan leaders, Hima representatives, Dorbar Shnong, Rangbah Shnong, Seng Kynthei, Seng Samla, and other community stakeholders.
Governor CH Vijayashankar, who attended as the chief guest adorned in traditional attire, lauded these legislative efforts aimed at reinforcing the state’s local governance structures, including Dorbar Shnong, Seng Kynthei, and Seng Samla Shnong. He highlighted Meghalaya’s deep ties to its matrilineal customs, stressing the role of women as vital custodians of its heritage. The Governor further praised the KHADC for translating these laws into the Khasi language, ensuring broader accessibility across all 54 Elakas and nearly 5,000 villages in its jurisdiction. He called for collaboration between the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) and the state government to balance tradition with modern societal needs, underscoring education as a cornerstone for sustained progress.
A poignant moment during the event was a communal pledge against drug abuse, initiated by Governor Vijayashankar, emphasizing the urgent need for a united front against substance addiction among the youth. He remarked, “The fight against drug abuse is a collective responsibility.”
The occasion was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and KHADC Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem. Tynsong described the congregation as a unique milestone in his political experience, recognizing its role in disseminating governance notifications across the KHADC’s administrative network. CEM Syiem thanked the Governor for his rapid approval of these pivotal acts, envisioning them as instruments of empowerment for grassroots institutions within the region.
