Battling the Chill: Kashmir’s Stunning Transformation into a Sub-Zero Winter Wonderland
The Meteorological Department in Srinagar anticipates generally cloudy weather across the region, including Srinagar, with no major changes expected today. However, there’s a likelihood of light snow in some isolated areas, particularly in the upper reaches of Jammu & Kashmir. As Kashmir endures the severe winter period known as “Chillai Kalan,” residents are facing frigid conditions, with most areas experiencing sub-zero temperatures.
In contrast, the Jammu region enjoys milder weather, with minimum temperatures staying above freezing, except in the Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley areas where temperatures hover around or slightly below zero. Meanwhile, Ladakh continues to endure its characteristic severe cold, with places like Kargil, Leh, and Drass experiencing daytime temperatures significantly below freezing, causing harsh living conditions.
As for travel, the traffic department has stated that, provided the weather and road conditions remain favorable, vehicles will be permitted to travel on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway today. However, the Srinagar-Kargil and Mughal Roads remain closed due to snow accumulation. Tourists, travelers, and transporters are advised to check the road status with Traffic Control Units in Jammu, Srinagar, Ramban, Udhampur, and Kargil before commencing their journeys.
This blend of regional meteorological conditions and road status updates highlights the challenges faced during this season. As residents and travelers brace for the cold, they are encouraged to remain informed and plan accordingly.
