Urgent Meeting: Tripura CM Confronts Amit Shah Over Controversial ‘Illegal’ Embankment Construction at Bangladesh Border
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to address pressing concerns affecting the state. Central to their discussion was the illegal construction of a dam in Sharifpur, Sylhet Division, Bangladesh, close to the Kailashahar border in Unakoti District. Dr. Saha presented a detailed letter elaborating on the potential repercussions of the dam on Tripura’s water resources, ecology, and border stability.
Sources indicated that Dr. Saha urged the Union Government to engage diplomatically with Bangladesh for a prompt resolution of the issue. Additionally, the Chief Minister brought attention to the recent flooding in Tripura, which has heavily disrupted lives and livelihoods. He appealed for the swift release of relief funds from the Union Government to facilitate rehabilitation efforts and combat future flooding challenges.
The illegal construction of an embankment has been a growing concern, as flagged by Congress MLA Birajit Sinha and Tripura Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das in the state assembly. They cautioned that the embankment, located on Bangladesh’s side at the zero line, poses potential risks to Rangauti Village in Kailashahar.
On Saturday, officials from Tripura’s Unakoti District submitted a comprehensive report to the state government, detailing the embankment’s construction adjacent to Rangauti Village. This structure, about 20 feet high and 15 meters wide, is being developed in an area prone to flooding.
A local inspection by Unakoti District Magistrate D.K. Chakma, Additional District Magistrate Arghya Saha, and other officials was conducted on Thursday to further assess the situation.
The discussions between Dr. Saha and Home Minister Shah hold significant implications for Tripura’s environmental security and inter-border relations, highlighting the necessity for a measured yet urgent governmental response.
