Urgent Breakthrough: Stakeholders Unite at IIM to Transform Shillong’s Waste Management in Meghalaya
IIM Shillong recently hosted a pivotal roundtable discussion on waste management challenges and opportunities. Organized by the Northeast Centre for Community Impact and Engagement (NE-CCIE), the event gathered key stakeholders, including representatives from the Meghalaya Institute of Governance, Bethany Society, OCU, and Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Nongthymmai Pyllun. The event aimed to identify sustainable solutions to Shillong’s critical waste management issues.
Prof DP Goyal, the Director of IIM Shillong, opened the proceedings by emphasizing the need for a collaborative approach involving academic institutions, governmental bodies, and local communities. Col Dinesh Adhikari, CAO of IIM Shillong, introduced innovative waste management practices from the campus that focus on waste reduction and sustainability.
Dr Teidorlang Lyngdoh, Chair of NE-CCIE, facilitated discussions on community-driven waste management innovations. Key topics included waste segregation and awareness, with proposals for labeled bins and targeted education campaigns to encourage community involvement. The introduction of water ATMs was proposed to reduce single-use plastic dependence and ensure clean drinking water.
Community engagement was highlighted, with suggestions to empower local youth to spearhead waste management initiatives, fostering both community ownership and employment. River stewardship was also discussed, focusing on involving riverside communities in pollution reduction and ecological restoration efforts.
Participants highlighted the potential for recycling and commercialization, suggesting the establishment of recycling centers and composting facilities to transform waste into economic resources. Collaborative efforts with the government were also emphasized, with calls for supportive policies to incentivize waste segregation and recycling initiatives.
The event concluded with a commitment to advancing sustainable waste management in Shillong, underscoring that innovative practices, community involvement, and strong policy support are crucial for fostering a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.
