Outrage Erupts: Junior Doctors at Medinipur Medical College Strike After Shocking Suspension by Mamata Banerjee
Junior doctors at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) in West Bengal have begun an indefinite strike demanding the reversal of suspension orders against six colleagues. This protest arose after an incident involving expired Ringer’s Lactate saline led to the death of a pregnant woman and the critical condition of three others last week. The suspensions were ordered by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
In reaction, 22 junior doctors from the Gynecology and Anesthesia departments ceased work in the hospital’s maternity ward starting Thursday night. While the Out-Patient Department (OPD) and Emergency services remain operational, junior doctors in the Medicine department have not yet joined the protest.
The striking doctors argue that the suspensions unfairly target them as scapegoats for broader systemic failures. They are calling for the suspension orders to be revoked and for a comprehensive, transparent investigation into the incident.
In a letter addressed to the college principal, the junior doctors expressed their frustration, stating that they are being unjustly portrayed as societal foes even as they work to save lives. They claim the suspensions are a diversion from serious issues such as adverse drug reactions and other systemic failures within the healthcare administration.
In response to the incident, the state health department has filed a police complaint against the suspended doctors. Additionally, Dr. Indranil Sen has been appointed as the new Superintendent of Medinipur Medical College, assuming his duties on Friday.
The situation highlights tensions within the healthcare system and calls into question accountability and systemic integrity amidst a tragic medical mishap. The doctors’ strike continues to underscore these pressing issues, demanding both justice for those involved and improvements in healthcare governance.
