Vanuatu’s electorate is heading to the polls for a snap election amid the aftermath of a destructive earthquake that hit the Pacific nation a month ago. Thursday has been marked as a public holiday to facilitate the voting process, with approximately 315,000 voters across 18 constituencies participating to select 52 new Members of Parliament (MPs). The Vanuatu Electoral Commission (VEC) has certified 202 candidates, spread across 265 polling stations that will operate until 4:30 p.m. local time.
Principal Electoral Officer Guilain Malessas stated that an unofficial count will occur at individual polling stations after closing, before the ballot boxes are transported to the capital, Port Vila, for an official tallying. According to parliamentary procedures, the new parliament is required to convene within 21 days of the official election results being announced.
This snap election was triggered last November when an opposition motion of no confidence attempted to unseat the government. In response, President Nikenike Vurobaravu, acting on ministers’ advice, dissolved the parliament. The situation was further complicated by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake that struck Port Vila on December 17, 2024, resulting in at least 14 fatalities and over 200 injuries, adding to the logistical and emotional challenges facing the nation.
Port Vila’s Central Business District remains closed, with many buildings deemed unsafe and classified as risk zones, underlining the country’s current struggles.
