Transforming Meghalaya: Bold 2025 Infrastructure Initiatives Empower State’s Future – Northeast News
Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has announced ambitious infrastructure plans to bolster the state’s connectivity, healthcare, governance, and road systems. Key projects include enhancing flight connectivity, establishing medical colleges, constructing a new government secretariat, and advancing road infrastructure.
Sangma is committed to making Umroi airport ready for commercial flights, vital for tourism, education, and the state’s development. “I am very focused on ensuring that commercial flights start landing in Umroi as soon as possible,” he stated, highlighting progress in technical feasibility assessments, allowing larger aircraft like the A320 to land. Airlines Indigo and SpiceJet have agreed to initiate operations once the runway is extended as per Airports Authority guidelines. Additionally, Shillong-Tura connectivity will improve under India’s UDAN scheme.
The government targets September 2025 to launch the Shillong Medical College, addressing manpower issues at Tura Medical College. “We are focused on overcoming the challenges in Tura,” Sangma noted, underscoring the significance of operationalizing both institutions for enhanced healthcare education.
A new secretariat at Mawdiangdiang is underway, with the foundation stone to be laid on Meghalaya Day, January 21. Sangma announced plans to complete several blocks within two years and commence relocations. The Mini Secretariat project in Tura, valued at Rs 120 crore, will extend administrative services to Jowai and Pynursla.
Major road projects include the Expression Corridor, a Rs 24,000 crore endeavor connecting Umiam to Rattacherra and extending into Assam, marking one of the region’s largest infrastructure initiatives. Elevated roads are also planned for Shillong to mitigate traffic congestion, linking key junctions to enhance city traffic flow. Discussions with the Union Minister for Road Transport are set to expedite these efforts.
“These projects will transform the state, and we are committed to ensuring they progress smoothly,” Sangma concluded, affirming their critical role in Meghalaya’s future development.
