Mamata Banerjee Takes Bold Stand: Emotional Crackdown on Negligent Doctors After Heartbreaking Tragedy in Midnapore Hospital
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced the suspension of 12 senior doctors and postgraduate trainees from Midnapore Medical College and Hospital following the death of a new mother and critical conditions of three others, reportedly due to the administration of substandard Ringer’s Lactate saline by junior doctors. Banerjee informed that the Crime Investigation Department (CID) will incorporate these medical professionals in their inquiry and may pursue criminal charges if necessary.
During a press briefing alongside Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and state health secretary N S Nigam, Banerjee stated that the negligence of the doctors on duty contributed to the incident. She emphasized that negligence is a criminal offense and mentioned the ongoing treatment of the three other affected mothers at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. To prevent future occurrences, Banerjee announced new guidelines for government hospitals and compensation of Rs 5 lakh and government jobs for the victims’ families.
The Chief Minister highlighted the absence and misconduct of senior doctors on the day of the incident, citing cases where a doctor reportedly serviced a private hospital 40 km away. Those suspended include key hospital staff such as the Resident Medical Officer, two assistant professors, and the medical superintendent. She also directed the installation of CCTV cameras at operation theatre entrances to monitor hospital activities more effectively.
Banerjee mentioned that medicines from the implicated company have been withdrawn from all hospitals, with samples sent for testing, as officials explore reliable alternative suppliers. Chief Secretary Pant disclosed that on the day of the incident, proper protocols were disregarded, with junior doctors performing deliveries without appropriate oversight or preparation. The Chief Minister vowed to ensure accountability and improve hospital oversight to safeguard patient welfare.
