Exciting Milestone: Tripura CM Manik Saha Announces Near Completion of Kokborok Language Mapping Project
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced significant strides in promoting the Kokborok language, including various initiatives by the state government. During the winter session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, he detailed efforts by the Department of Kokborok and Other Minority Languages to enhance educational resources and support for the language.
A key initiative involves the language mapping project underway to analyze the language profiles of teachers and students across Tripura schools. This endeavor aims to optimize Kokborok language education by identifying the distribution and proficiency of Kokborok-speaking educators and pupils.
CM Saha, also the state’s Education Minister, highlighted the integration of Kokborok as a subject in numerous schools, ranging from primary to higher secondary levels. These include 1,163 institutions at the primary level and another 313 across secondary and higher secondary levels. For the upcoming academic year 2024-25, Kokborok instruction will be expanded to an additional 20 schools.
Since the establishment of the Kokborok and Other Minority Languages Department in 2012, a concerted effort has been made to provide Kokborok textbooks free of charge. The department has published 59 literary books to date, alongside the “Teacher’s Handbook” to aid educators from Classes III to XII. Between 2018 and 2024, the department organized numerous workshops, seminars, and training programs to foster development in the Kokborok language.
Dr. Saha also mentioned that new digital learning avenues are being explored, with the second batch of the online Kokborok learning course set to commence soon in a modern digital classroom. Additionally, specialized Kokborok language courses targeted at professionals are being conducted at Umakanta Academy School in Agartala, reinforcing the government’s commitment to preserving and expanding the use of Kokborok throughout the state.
