Exciting Breakthrough: Mizoram to Experience Vital Village & Local Council Polls on February 12!

Polling for Mizoram’s 544 village councils and 111 local councils across nine districts and two urban areas will take place on February 12, announced the State Election Commission (SEC) on Thursday. State Election Commissioner H Lalthlangliana confirmed that vote counting will commence at 7 pm or as soon as polling concludes the same day. January 23 marks the deadline for filing nominations, with candidates able to withdraw until January 27. Nomination papers will be scrutinized on January 24.

The election process is set to culminate with the formation of executive bodies by February 14 and completion by February 15. In total, there are 2,416 seats in the 544 village councils, with 613 reserved for women. Within the Aizawl Municipal Corporation and Lunglei Municipal Council, 111 local councils offer 723 seats, including 195 reserved for women. Notably, this election represents the inaugural local council election in the Lunglei Municipal Council area since its establishment in 2023.

The final electoral roll as of January 8 indicates that 4,37,708 voters, including 2,22,098 women, are eligible for the village council elections. In terms of local council voters, the roll lists 2,44,726 individuals, of which 1,31,423 are women in 87 local councils within Aizawl Municipal Corporation. Lunglei Municipal Council, comprising 24 local councils, lists 41,206 eligible voters.

It is essential to note that voters from Lai, Mara, and Chakma councils in Lawngtlai and Siaha districts are not included as elections in these autonomous district council areas are conducted separately.
