Assam Rifles’ 33rd Battalion Earns Prestigious WCDM-DRR Award 2024 for Heroic Manipur Flood Response
The 33rd Battalion of the Assam Rifles has been honored with the esteemed World Congress on Disaster Management – Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDM-DRR) Award 2024. This accolade recognizes the battalion’s exemplary disaster response and relief efforts during the catastrophic floods in Manipur, triggered by Cyclone Remal. The award ceremony took place at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi, attended by various dignitaries and officials.
Colonel Radha Krishna, Commandant of the 33rd Assam Rifles, received the award from Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry. This recognition highlights the battalion’s rapid and effective actions amidst a severe humanitarian crisis. The devastating floods during May, June, and July 2024 submerged vast regions, displacing thousands and causing extensive loss of life and property in Manipur.
Demonstrating remarkable efficiency, the 33rd Assam Rifles mobilized 47 flood response units within an hour, spearheading rescue and relief efforts. In May’s Operation JAL RAHAT – I, the unit rescued 2,065 people and provided essential healthcare via mobile medical clinics. Similarly, in July’s Operation JAL RAHAT – II, another 1,380 lives were saved, alongside offering humanitarian aid and secure shelters for the displaced.
Among their notable operations were the nighttime evacuation of 21 critically ill ICU patients from Raj Medicity hospital and the challenging rescue of a 73-year-old paralytic man trapped in 13 feet of floodwaters in Nagampal.
This award not only honors the courage and professionalism of the 33rd Assam Rifles but also underscores its critical role in disaster management and humanitarian aid across India’s demanding terrains. As Manipur progresses on its recovery path, the Assam Rifles embodies resilience and steadfast dedication to protecting lives and inspiring hope during crises.
