Shocking: Meta Faces Parliamentary Panel Summons Over Zuckerberg’s Explosive Remarks on 2024 LS Polls
New Delhi, January 14 (IANS): Social media giant Meta, led by founder Mark Zuckerberg, is facing scrutiny from an Indian Parliamentary committee over allegedly misleading comments concerning the 2024 General Elections in India. Nishikant Dubey, a BJP MP and chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, disclosed on platform X that the committee would soon summon Meta for “spreading misinformation” and demand an apology.
The controversy stems from Zuckerberg’s recent discussion with podcaster Joe Rogan, where he suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic caused public trust to erode, leading to the defeat of many incumbent governments, including India’s, in the 2024 elections. He labeled it a global phenomenon, attributing defeat to either inflation, pandemic economic policies, or government handling of COVID-19.
Zuckerberg’s remarks have been challenged as “factually incorrect” by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He argued that instead of experiencing a loss, the 2024 elections in India reflected an endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, with the NDA securing a third consecutive victory, highlighting good governance and sustained public trust.
Nishikant Dubey expressed concern about misinformation undermining democratic countries’ images and insisted on an apology from Meta to both the Indian Parliament and its citizens. Meanwhile, Vaishnaw advised Meta and Zuckerberg to prioritize accuracy and reliable information.
This clash underscores the delicate balance global tech companies must maintain while navigating nuanced political landscapes, particularly in a democratic setting like India. Government officials emphasize the importance of accurate representation to prevent spreading misinformation, especially when platforms like Meta influence public discourse on a broad scale. As tensions rise, Meta’s response to the Parliamentary notice will be closely observed, potentially setting a precedent for accountability in digital communications.
