After a four-day downturn, benchmark domestic equity indices achieved modest gains today. The Bombay Stock Exchange’s 30-share index, Sensex, climbed by 170 points, ending at 76,500. Similarly, the National Stock Exchange’s Nifty-50 rose by 90 points, closing at 23,176.
The broader market indices at the BSE displayed resilience, rebounding from the previous day’s sell-off. Notably, the Mid-Cap index soared by over 2.1 percent, while the Small-Cap index rose by approximately 1.7 percent.
Within the Sensex index, 19 out of 30 companies registered gains. Adani Ports emerged as a top performer, increasing by over 4.7 percent, followed closely by NTPC with a 4.2 percent rise and Tata Steel with a 3.2 percent gain. However, not all companies fared well; HCL Tech plummeted by over 8.6 percent, Hindustan Unilever dropped nearly 3.5 percent, whereas Titan and TCS each declined by over 1.3 percent.
Out of 20 sectoral indices at the BSE, 16 concluded the day in positive territory. The utilities sector led the rally, soaring by over 5.2 percent, followed by the power sector, which gained 4.5 percent, and the metal sector, up by 3.5 percent. On the downside, the Focused IT sector shed almost 1.9 percent, Information Technology decreased by 1.7 percent, and the Teck sector fell by 1.22 percent.
Market breadth at the BSE was decidedly optimistic, with 2,867 companies advancing, 1,096 declining, and 110 remaining unchanged. Meanwhile, at the National Stock Exchange, 14 companies reached their 52-week highs, contrasting sharply with 152 companies hitting their 52-week lows.
In summary, the market saw a rebound today, driven by gains in specific sectors and companies, although some segments and firms continue to face challenges. This mixed yet predominantly positive movement signals investor confidence and a hopeful outlook in broader market indices.
