Heroic Escape: Rhino Poaching Foiled in Assam’s Orang, Lethal Weapons Seized
Guwahati: In a decisive move against wildlife crime, Darrang Police successfully disrupted a rhino poaching scheme at Orang National Park on January 13 by arresting a suspect and seizing several weapons. The park, often known as the “mini-Kaziranga,” is renowned for its population of one-horned rhinoceroses. Under constant threat from poachers seeking rhino horns for the black market, the park has been a focal point for conservation efforts.
The arrest was confirmed by Assam’s Director General of Police, GP Singh, who shared the development on social media platform X. “One person arrested and three weapons and ammunition recovered by @Darrang_Police. The arrested person was planning to carry out rhino poaching in Orang National Park,” he posted.
During the operation, authorities recovered three firearms and a cache of ammunition, highlighting the severity of the intended poaching attempt. The ongoing investigation seeks to uncover more about the suspect’s identity and the origins of the confiscated weapons.
The swift action by the Assam Police underscores their commitment to preserving the state’s wildlife heritage. Orang National Park, a haven for biodiversity, remains under constant surveillance to prevent poaching activities, ensuring the protection of its cherished rhinoceros population.
