A 10-month-old child in Assam, India, has been diagnosed with a human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection, marking the first known case in the northeastern state, officials reported on Saturday. The child, who is being treated at Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, is currently in stable condition.
This discovery comes on the heels of recent reports of HMPV cases across India, with four cases identified in Gujarat, and three each in West Bengal and Maharashtra. Additionally, two cases have been reported in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
In response to the growing number of infections, India’s federal health ministry has urged states to enhance their surveillance of influenza-like illnesses and severe respiratory infections. Despite the increase in reported cases, the ministry reassured the public that HMPV, a virus known globally since 2001, does not pose a significant threat. The country remains well-prepared for any potential rise in respiratory infections.
HMPV is among the many viruses that can affect people of all ages, especially during the winter and early spring. Typically, the infection results in mild, self-limiting conditions, with most individuals recovering without intervention. However, medical professionals caution that vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, may experience more severe symptoms.
The emergence of HMPV in various regions of India underscores the need for robust public health measures and continued vigilance in monitoring respiratory illnesses to prevent any widespread health impact.
