Unveiling the Remarkable Success of Sericulture in Nagaland: A Thriving Tapestry of Diverse Varieties | MorungExpress
Morung Express News, Dimapur | January 12: The Department of Sericulture’s data for the financial year 2023-24 highlights substantial progress in silk production across Nagaland, particularly in Muga, Eri, Oak Tasar, and Mulberry varieties, according to the Nagaland Statistical Handbook 2024.
Muga silk, renowned for its golden luster, upheld its traditional value with 2,151 acres under cultivation. The production included 0.315 lakh disease-free layings (DFLS) and 10.39 lakh reelable cocoons, resulting in a raw silk yield of 0.24 metric tonnes.
Eri silk led in terms of cultivation area, spanning 15,280 acres, significantly supporting rural employment and the textile industry. It produced 59.92 lakh DFLS, 446.44 metric tonnes of empty cocoons, and an impressive 379.92 metric tonnes of spun silk. Eri pupae production reached 1,710 metric tonnes, valuable for various industrial uses.
Oak Tasar silk occupied a niche role with 315 acres. It produced 0.10 lakh DFLS and 3.33 lakh reelable cocoons, albeit with a modest raw silk yield of 0.081 metric tonnes, indicating its potential for high-quality silk production in suitable climates.
Mulberry silk solidified its position as the backbone of commercial silk production, covering 835 acres. With 0.88 lakh DFLS, its reelable cocoon output was 39.25 metric tonnes, leading to the highest raw silk production among the varieties at 4.31 metric tonnes, essential for both domestic and export markets.
These statistics underscore the collective efforts of sericulture farmers, researchers, and policymakers in advancing silk production. Eri silk remains pivotal for employment generation, while Muga silk preserves cultural significance despite lower output. There are growth opportunities by enhancing technologies for Muga and Oak Tasar, and by expanding Mulberry cultivation. With these strides and challenges, the sericulture sector continues to bolster rural development, biodiversity, and economic growth in Nagaland.
