Shocking: Over 1,769 Attacks on Minorities in Bangladesh Since August 2024 – Urgent Call for Action
The Bangladesh Hindu Buddha Christian Unity Council reported 1,769 incidents of communal violence and vandalism against minorities since August 4, 2024. This highlights significant challenges faced by vulnerable groups. The Council claims that 2,010 incidents targeted minority lives, properties, and places of worship, raising serious safety concerns.
In response, the Bangladesh Police have begun a thorough investigation into the Council’s claims, visiting all identified locations and individuals. Authorities have urged victims to submit formal complaints, promising increased security measures. So far, 62 cases have been filed, resulting in 35 arrests.
Preliminary investigations reveal a possible political angle to the incidents. Of the 1,769 cases reported, 1,234 were politically motivated, 20 were confirmed as communal, and 161 were unsubstantiated. The Council’s report highlighted that 82.8% of the alleged incidents occurred on August 5, 2024—the day Sheikh Hasina was ousted—with 1,452 attacks recorded on that day alone.
Separate from the Council’s report, police have registered 134 additional complaints of communal violence between August 5, 2024, and January 8, 2025. These led to 53 additional cases filed and 65 arrests. Overall, since August 4, 2024, authorities have registered 115 cases and arrested 100 individuals linked to communal violence.
The Interim Government has emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on communal violence, committing to uphold human rights regardless of creed, ethnicity, or gender. Police have been instructed to take decisive action against offenders, and compensation for victims has been announced.
To improve reporting and prevention efforts, police have introduced a dedicated WhatsApp number for communal violence complaints and maintain regular communication with minority community leaders. The National Emergency Services (999) has been integrated with a Focal Point at police headquarters to speed up responses to such incidents.
