Revolutionary Highway Expansion: 10 Game-Changing Underpasses to Dramatically Ease Traffic from Bhiwandi’s Bustling Warehouses | Mumbai News
Traveling through Thane’s typically congested highways is set to become less challenging with the upcoming completion of the Vadpe-Majiwada expansion of the Old Mumbai-Nashik Highway. This ambitious project extends over 23.8 km and aims to transform the route into an eight-lane thoroughfare, complete with two-lane service roads on either side. A key feature of the project is the addition of ten vehicular underpasses located at strategic points, including Walshin, Sonale, and Mankoli Motagaon, designed to alleviate traffic congestion particularly exacerbated by heavy goods vehicles from Bhiwandi’s busy warehouses. These underpasses, which total an approach road length of 8 km, are projected for completion by May and are expected to significantly ease traffic flow.
In addition to the underpasses, the project includes the erection of three major bridges and a flyover, notably the Kasheli Creek Bridge spanning 817.5 meters. Furthermore, the completion of the final 76-km stretch of the Samruddhi Mahamarg, a 701-km expressway connecting Igatpuri to Thane, is nearing. This stretch, which includes a critical 4.2-km spur linking to the Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway, is set to complete by January end and promises to massively reduce travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur. The spur’s construction is a significant engineering endeavor, involving meticulous blasting to level a six-story-high slope.
Beyond enhancing connectivity and reducing travel times, both the Vadpe-Majiwada expansion and Samruddhi Mahamarg are projected to spur economic growth, with improved traffic flow and amenities encouraging commuter convenience and economic activity along the route. An MSRDC official highlighted the planned infrastructure’s potential to enhance economic opportunities in the region.
