Mizoram Cops Make a Shocking $211.64 Crore Drug Bust: A Major Win Against Crime in 2024 | Guwahati News
In 2024, Mizoram Police successfully executed an expansive anti-drug operation, seizing illicit drugs and substances worth over Rs 211.64 crore. This massive haul included significant quantities of heroin, crystal meth, and methamphetamine. According to the Superintendent of Police (CID Crime), the crackdown led to the arrest of 468 individuals linked to drug-related crimes.
The authorities registered 282 cases under the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, which resulted in the confiscation of 80.856 kg of heroin valued at more than Rs 24.25 crore and the apprehension of 388 suspects. Furthermore, police captured 35.155 kg of crystal meth, worth over Rs 105.46 crore, leading to four cases and three arrests. Methamphetamine tablets weighing 627.741 kg and valued at more than Rs 81.61 crore were also seized, resulting in 51 arrests across 30 cases.
Additional confiscations included 1,075 kg of caffeine valued at Rs 15.60 lakh, 305.387 kg of cannabis worth Rs 15.26 lakh, and pharmaceutical drugs like codeine and alprazolam valued over Rs 1.08 lakh. Overall, 339 cases were filed under the ND&PS Act, 1985, accounting for these drug seizures.
Separate operations conducted by the state excise and narcotics department netted 46.566 kg of heroin and 138.817 kg of methamphetamine tablets, bringing the total seizures by both agencies to a record-breaking 127.455 kg of heroin and 766.558 kg of methamphetamine tablets.
Tragically, the year also saw 71 drug-related deaths, comprising 60 males and 11 females. Since the first documented heroin-related death in 1984, the total number of fatalities climbed to 1,881 by the end of 2024. This tally includes 230 women, with the majority of deaths attributed to spasmo proxyvon and parvon spa until their production ceased. Thereafter, mixed substance abuse and heroin became leading causes of drug-related fatalities.
