Exciting News: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh Unveils Cutting-Edge Regional Meteorological Centre in Jammu
Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology; Earth Sciences, has unveiled plans to establish a Regional Meteorological Centre in Jammu. This initiative is expected to enhance meteorological services in Jammu and Kashmir, improving disaster preparedness and climate resilience. The new center underscores the government’s dedication to bolstering scientific infrastructure, providing citizens with reliable weather services, and is aligned with the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) mission to deliver precise and timely forecasts.
Significantly, the existing Srinagar Meteorology Centre holds a prestigious status as a Centennial Centre recognized by the World Meteorological Organization. Dr. Singh expressed optimism that the upcoming facility in Jammu would mirror this success, addressing the unique geographical and climatic challenges of the region. Furthermore, Dr. Singh announced future Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between the Srinagar Meteorology Centre and various academic institutions, including the University of Jammu, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, and the Islamic University of Science and Technology. These collaborations aim to advance research and innovation in meteorological sciences and nurture a new generation of weather experts.
Jammu and Kashmir has significantly expanded its meteorological infrastructure, now boasting twice the number of Automated Weather Stations compared to a decade ago and the installation of advanced X-band Radars in Jammu, Srinagar, Manihal, and Leh. These advancements have been crucial in providing accurate weather predictions for significant events such as the Amarnath Yatra and Vaishno Devi pilgrimages.
Dr. Singh shared these developments at the “Stakeholders Workshop on Weather & Climate Services,” part of the IMD’s 150th-anniversary celebrations. The milestone will culminate in a grand event in New Delhi on January 15, 2025, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the chief guest, highlighting the department’s rich legacy and its future roadmap.
