Outrage Unleashed: Bangladesh’s Yunus Government Condemns India’s Stunning Claims of Mistreatment
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Bangladesh has dismissed India’s claims of mistreatment of Indian fishermen detained in Bangladesh as “baseless and fabricated.” This response came following accusations that the fishermen had faced physical abuse by Bangladeshi authorities, an allegation that Bangladesh vehemently rejects. The MOFA emphasized that such claims undermine the spirit of trust and mutual respect between the two countries.
In a detailed statement, Bangladesh assured that the 95 detained Indian fishermen were treated appropriately, in line with international norms. Consular access was granted to Indian High Commission representatives, who verified the well-being of the fishermen during their detention. The detainees underwent health screenings, which confirmed their medical fitness, and received full support from the Bangladesh Coast Guard upon their release and repatriation.
On January 5, 2025, a successful reciprocal repatriation saw 90 Bangladeshi fishermen detained in India and 95 Indian fishermen detained in Bangladesh exchanged near the International Maritime Boundary Line. This exchange also included the return of fishing vessels: two Bangladeshi and six Indian boats were handed over to their respective countries.
Bangladesh’s MOFA urged all parties to avoid making unfounded allegations. It highlighted the government’s commitment to resolving humanitarian issues amicably with India. The exchange was facilitated by coordination between the Indian Coast Guard and Bangladesh Coast Guard, involving vessels ICG Ship Varad and Amrit Kaur.
Bangladesh calls for continued cooperation with India, underscoring the importance of maintaining good relations and collaborating on mutual concerns.
