Union Minister Joyfully Pledges Over 3 Lakh New Homes Under PMAY for a Transformative 2025-26
On January 9th in Guwahati, a grand Griha Pravesh ceremony at Sarusajai Stadium marked a significant milestone for 50,000 families who celebrated their new homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). The ceremony witnessed the presence of Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who made key announcements poised to impact Assam’s housing and agricultural sectors.
Chouhan disclosed that over 3 lakh additional houses had been approved by the Centre for the current financial year, with another 3 lakh expected in April. Since the inception of the Modi 3.0 administration, 1,59,000 houses have been allocated to eligible households in Assam. He noted that approximately 7 lakh houses are still needed according to Awaas+ data. To address this, 3.8 lakh houses were sanctioned this year, with plans for another 3.8 lakh next year. Funding for these projects will see 90% contributed by the Centre and 10% by the state. Chouhan also announced a new survey process through the Awaas+ 2024 Mobile App, enabling citizens to self-nominate for PMAY.
In agriculture, Chouhan introduced compensation plans for crop damage by animals and the development of cold storage facilities. He unveiled ₹50 crore in agricultural machinery, a modern warehouse, and a new market yard to enhance the agricultural sector’s infrastructure.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commended the success of PMAY, referencing the 5.55 lakh homes inaugurated in Jorhat by Prime Minister Modi the previous year. Sarma highlighted the importance of transparency in the geo-tagging process, advocating for female self-help groups to manage it, thereby preventing corruption.
Sarma praised the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana for aiding farmers during floods and urged extension of insurance to cover crop destruction by animals. He called for increased funding to improve agricultural productivity. The event also celebrated the achievements of 20 women from self-help groups, emphasizing their financial empowerment and announcing financial aid ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 to further support these groups.
This ceremony underscores the PMAY’s mission since 2015 to provide affordable housing across urban and rural areas, ensuring every family in India has access to a pucca house with basic amenities.
