India is preparing to host a high-profile international javelin competition later this year, with the nation’s celebrated athlete, Neeraj Chopra, leading the event. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) announced this initiative on Tuesday, intending to boost local interest in athletics and draw global talent.
Neeraj Chopra, a two-time Olympic medallist and the reigning world champion, has emerged as a global icon in track and field. His illustrious career features a historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, a silver at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, and another gold medal in Budapest in 2023. Additionally, Chopra claimed an Olympic silver in Paris last year and has been a dominant force in the Diamond League, with notable successes in Zurich, Eugene, and Brussels.
Despite his international triumphs, Chopra has rarely competed in India, aside from a victory at the Federation Cup in Bhubaneswar last year. To capitalize on his global fame and promote athletics domestically, the AFI plans an exclusive tournament featuring the world’s top javelin throwers. AFI president Adille Sumariwalla revealed plans for the event, set to follow the World Championships in Tokyo this September, emphasizing Chopra’s crucial involvement.
Chopra, well-regarded for his camaraderie with fellow athletes, is expected to personally invite elite competitors, enhancing the event’s appeal. His commitment to promoting javelin is exemplified by his participation in various prestigious meets, despite occasional setbacks.
Beyond this event, India harbors aspirations to host significant future competitions, such as the 2029 World Championships and the 2027 World Relays. The AFI has also proposed a bronze-level Continental Tour meet in Bhubaneswar and is bidding for the 2028 World Junior Championships, demonstrating India’s growing ambitions in global athletics.
