MV Trishul Triumphantly Completes Maiden Voyage, Delivering 1,500 Tonnes of Vital Cement from Kolkata to Guwahati!
The maiden voyage of MV Trishul, part of the ‘Jalvahak’ freight service scheme, marked a significant achievement in India’s inland waterways transport sector. On January 6, MV Trishul, carrying dumb barges Ajay and Dikshu, successfully transported 1,500 tonnes of cement from Kolkata to Pandu, Guwahati, navigating via the Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR). This journey emphasizes the strategic shift towards utilizing National Waterways 1 (river Ganga), 2 (river Brahmaputra), and 16 (river Barak) under the ‘Jalvahak’ scheme.
The initiative aims to incentivize long-haul cargo movement, offering a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional rail and road transport. The Fixed Day Scheduled Sailing Service operates on the routes between Kolkata, Patna, and Varanasi on NW 1 and between Kolkata and Pandu on NW 2, reinforcing the reliability of national waterways.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, hailed the successful voyage of MV Trishul as a vital milestone in transforming India’s logistics infrastructure. He emphasized that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, there is a robust commitment towards sustainable logistics solutions, which are essential as India progresses towards becoming a developed nation.
Sonowal highlighted that the Jalvahak scheme not only decongests rail and road networks but also promotes eco-friendly transportation solutions. It empowers vessel operators while providing businesses a reliable logistics option.
This coordinated effort between the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the central agency for waterway development, and the Inland and Coastal Shipping Limited (ICSL), a subsidiary of the Shipping Corporation of India Limited (SCIL), sets a precedent for future logistics transformations.
The launch of these scheduled freight services is designed to assure stakeholders of the timely delivery of cargo, fostering trust and confidence in India’s capabilities to harness its extensive inland waterways for efficient transportation.
