Devastating 7.1 Quake Strikes Tibet-Nepal Border, Tragically Claiming 30 Lives
A devastating earthquake measuring 7.1 in magnitude struck near the Tibet-Nepal border early Tuesday morning, resulting in at least 30 fatalities and significant destruction, including collapsed structures. The tremors extended to Bihar and parts of North India, causing widespread concern. The earthquake, recorded at 6:35 am IST, had its epicenter in Tibet, approximately 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, Nepal, as reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS). The quake originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Meanwhile, China’s state media reported a slightly lower magnitude of 6.8, placing the epicenter at an altitude of 4,200 meters.
Lobuche, near Nepal’s Khumbu Glacier and about 150 kilometers east of Kathmandu, was significantly impacted by the earthquake. This location is notably close to the Everest Base Camp, heightening the area’s vulnerability. Subsequent seismic activity was also observed, as the National Center for Seismology recorded two additional tremors later that morning. A 4.7 magnitude quake hit at 7:02 am IST, followed by a 4.9 magnitude quake at 7:07 am IST, both occurring at varying depths but within the same vicinity.
Rescue and relief operations are actively being conducted as authorities continue to evaluate the damage and address the needs of affected communities. The exact impact and scale of destruction remain under assessment, while efforts are made to provide immediate assistance to those in need.
