Major Victory Against Drugs in Arunachal: Over 500g Heroin & 7kg Cannabis Seized, 91 Arrested in Naharlagun Crackdown

In 2024, the Naharlagun Police in Arunachal Pradesh successfully executed ‘Operation Dawn’, yielding substantial results in their fight against drug-related offences. Under the leadership of Superintendent Mihin Gambo, the operation resulted in the seizure of a significant cache of illegal substances, including 588.42 grams of heroin, 7,042.5 grams of cannabis, 48 grams of Lorazepam, and 233.81 grams of Morphine. Additionally, authorities registered 41 NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) cases and arrested 91 drug peddlers throughout the year.

The operation has led to marked improvements over the previous year, as the police intensified their crackdown on drug activities, resulting in the confiscation of more contraband and the prosecution of offenders. This initiative had a broader impact on the crime rate in the region, with a noticeable decrease in theft and burglary incidents, issues often tied to drug addiction.

In 2023, 152 cases of theft and burglary were registered, underscoring the influence of effective policing on reducing associated crimes. Beyond enforcement, the operation included comprehensive awareness campaigns. These efforts, conducted in schools, colleges, and rehabilitation centers, aimed to educate the youth on the risks of drug abuse and fostered a supportive environment for those seeking rehabilitation. As a result, many individuals with addiction issues were encouraged to pursue de-addiction programs.

Superintendent Gambo lauded the collaboration between the community and police, acknowledging the crucial role of public support in the campaign’s success. He encouraged continued cooperation as preparations for ‘Operation Dawn 2.0’ are underway, promising to build on the accomplishments of the past year and further curb the regional drug menace. This initiative not only disrupted drug supply chains but also played a vital role in deterring youth from addiction, contributing to a safer community in Naharlagun.
