With temporary shelter provided at Lal Singh Academy, many families remain anxious about their future housing prospects despite government assistance. The Assam state government has stepped in with financial aid, distributing Rs 4.8 lakh to four families on Friday and an additional Rs 11,96,500 to 23 families on Saturday. However, the situation remains dire as residents attempting to salvage belongings from damaged homes found most items irretrievable.
Phaguni Deka, a local resident, recounted how the incident completely damaged her home, causing minor injuries to her family members. Currently residing in a nearby school, Deka expressed uncertainty about where they would go once asked to vacate. Similarly, Razal Ali, who lived in a rented room with his family, cited losses amounting to lakhs and noted the unaffordable rental prices in the city, heightening his anxiety about future accommodations.
The crisis has another dimension, with the Lal Singh Academy’s conversion to a relief center hindering students’ education. Principal Marami Barah highlighted the disruption, emphasizing the importance of adequate preparation time for students approaching their HSLC exams. Despite providing temporary aid, officials have acknowledged the lack of specific provisions for families living in rented homes to secure new accommodations. Ajit Kumar Sarmah, Kamrup (Metropolitan) additional district commissioner, confirmed that compensation aligns with government guidelines and affirmed ongoing efforts to support affected families who can’t find accommodation.
