Passionately Driving India to Become a Chip Manufacturing Powerhouse: Ashwini Vaishnaw’s Bold Vision to Empower a Skilled Workforce
Guwahati, Jan 3: The Central government is committed to establishing India as a hub for semiconductor manufacturing, while also cultivating a workforce skilled in the industry’s evolving needs, announced Union Railways and Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently. During the inauguration of the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) across 12 locations, including five northeastern states, the minister highlighted the institution’s role in equipping students with essential technological skills.
Vaishnaw emphasized the new strategic interpretation of the northeast as a “New Engine” for national development. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was inked between NIELIT and Tata Electronics Private Ltd (TEPL) to bolster India’s semiconductor skilling ecosystem. This partnership, signed by NIELIT Director General Dr. M.M. Tripathi and TEPL CEO Dr. Randhir Thakur, aims to create skill centers, diploma programs, and offer workshops focused on semiconductor ATMP technologies. TEPL will provide technical expertise and internships, while NIELIT will handle education and training efforts.
The announcement included the launching of NIELIT University, envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to nurture professionals in cutting-edge fields like Semiconductor Manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, Industry 4.0, and Quantum Computing. The new NIELIT campus near Guwahati will focus on semiconductor and electronics manufacturing.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reinforced the vision that the world will soon rely on semiconductor chips “Made in India” and “Made in Assam,” emphasizing the region’s potential as a thriving semiconductor hub. He stressed the importance of developing a skilled local workforce to nurture this burgeoning sector and ensure Assam’s prominent role in the global technology landscape.
This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to fostering local talent and creating job opportunities, positioning India and Assam at the forefront of the semiconductor industry.
