Devastating Fire Incidents Signal Alarming Start to New Year in Dimapur – MorungExpress Exclusive
Dimapur: New Year Marred by Consecutive Fires Leaving Many Homeless
Dimapur, January 2 (Morung Express News): The New Year festivities in Dimapur turned somber as consecutive fire incidents on January 1 and 2 rendered numerous families without shelter. Following the New Year’s Day blaze at K Kire Colony, Kuda Village, another devastating fire erupted at Naharbari, displacing approximately 150 families as bamboo houses were engulfed in flames.
The Naharbari fire, which occurred on January 2, necessitated a large-scale response involving fire fighters from three local fire stations, the State Disaster Response Force, and Assam Rifles. The tightly packed bamboo houses with tin roofs on rented land exacerbated the rapid spread of the fire. Fire and Emergency Services reported this incident as a major fire, which, despite its intensity, was eventually contained, preventing further damage to the surrounding structures.
A contingent of 30–40 firefighters from Dimapur’s Central, West, and Chümoukedima fire stations mobilized to control the blaze. They deployed four fire trucks from Central Fire Station and two from both West and Chümoukedima Fire Stations, successfully bringing the fire under control within nearly two hours. Fortunately, there were no reports of human casualties.
On January 1, K Kire Colony experienced a severe fire damaging four houses and a shop, including an Assam-type house along with three bamboo houses. The incident occurred while residents were attending church services around 10-10:30 am. Firefighting efforts, involving four fire trucks, managed to contain the fire by noon without any casualties reported.
These back-to-back incidents have highlighted the need for effective fire safety measures in densely populated areas, emphasizing the vulnerability of neighborhoods primarily constructed with bamboo. As authorities assessed the damage, immediate relief efforts began for the affected families to restore some semblance of normalcy in the aftermath of these devastating fires.
