Chaos in Kharguli: Guwahati Waterpipe Burst Unleashes Tempest of Outages – Surge Protection System Struggles
A major disruption hit Guwahati’s Kharguli area on January 2 due to a burst in a water pipeline, causing concerns about water supply interruptions from January 3 to 5. The incident reportedly resulted from a pressure surge linked to a power interruption during preparations for launching a new surge protection tank at the Kharguli Water Treatment Plant.
Assam Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah addressed the media, revealing that a pressure surge was the likely cause behind the pipeline failure. He noted that expert recommendations for a surge protection tank were integrated and set for operation, only for the burst to occur during preparations. Mallabaruah emphasized that technical investigations are ongoing, and the Chief Minister has been briefed on the issue.
In response, the Guwahati Jal Board (GJB) announced a temporary halt in water supply to install and test the surge protection system, pivotal for the city’s water stability. Affected areas encompass Amiya Nagar, Chandmari, Rajgarh, Ulubari, Rupnagar, and nearby regions. Additionally, locales such as Joypur, Ramsa Hill, Silpukhuri, and Dighalipukhuri may experience leakages as the distribution network undergoes testing and flushing procedures.
Meanwhile, the district administration is evaluating the damages from the pipeline burst, with local residents expressing frustration over recurrent issues. Given a similar past incident attributed to the lack of surge protection systems, residents are calling for more proactive measures.
The GJB has extended an apology to those inconvenienced and committed to swift restoration actions. Nonetheless, the incident has spotlighted lingering concerns about the resilience and capability of Guwahati’s water infrastructure to support the city’s escalating demands. The episode underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to bolster the city’s water supply system against future challenges.
