Assam STF Chief Triumphantly Takes Charge as Guwahati Police Commissioner: A New Era Begins!
Guwahati Police Get New Commissioner: Partha Sarathi Mahanta Appointed
In a significant reshuffle within Assam’s police department, Partha Sarathi Mahanta has been named the new police commissioner of Guwahati. Previously serving as the inspector general of police (administration), Mahanta will now take over from Diganta Barah, a 2004 batch IPS officer who held the position for two years. Despite his new role, Mahanta will retain his current responsibilities as the chief of the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF).
The announcement was made in an official notification by Assam’s home and political department on December 30. The reshuffle also involves Diganta Barah, who will assume new duties as Inspector General in the Special Branch and as director of the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy. Barah succeeded Harmeet Singh as the Guwahati police commissioner in 2022 and has previously served as the commissioner and secretary of the home and political department.
Additionally, Akhilesh Kumar Singh, a 2003-batch IPS officer, will now serve as Inspector General of law and order while maintaining his previous assignment in the communication department. Lachit Baruah and Prashanta Kumar Bhuyan have also received new postings within the department, with Bhuyan moving to the role of IG administration.
These changes underscore ongoing efforts to streamline and enhance police operations in the region, promising renewed leadership and direction within the Guwahati Police.
