Agartala, 30th December 2024: In a distressing incident that underscores the challenges of wildlife conservation, a male elephant suffered severe injuries after being struck by a high-speed train between Teliamura and Mungiakami Railway stations in the Khowai District of Tripura. The unfortunate event unfolded due to what Khowai District Forest Officer (DFO) Akshay Bhorde described as negligence on the part of the train’s locomotive pilot.
The impact led to fractures in both of the elephant’s back legs, sparking immediate concern and response from local authorities and wildlife conservationists. Following the incident, DFO Bhorde, who quickly arrived at the site, provided crucial updates to the media on the elephant’s condition and recovery efforts.
A veterinary team dispatched from Agartala has been actively involved in the animal’s treatment. They administered preliminary medicines, including painkillers, to stabilize the injured elephant. Despite initial refusal, the elephant began consuming banana trees today, marking a positive sign of recovery.
Efforts are underway to secure additional treatment support for the elephant.
