Bangladesh Resolves Border Tension: Powerful Dialogue with Myanmar and Arakan Army Sparks Hope
On December 30, Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, announced its engagement with both the Myanmar government and the rebel Arakan Army (AA), which now controls the 271-kilometer border shared by the countries. During a visit to Teknaf, a southeastern border area, Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated that Bangladeshi security forces are cautiously managing the frontier. Stability is a priority, despite occasional gunfire and mortar shells disrupting the area, which has made fishing in the Naf River unsafe.
Chowdhury acknowledged additional troop mobilization amid reports of the AA ousting Myanmar government forces from Rakhine. Bangladesh has been hosting over one million Rohingya refugees since 2017, following their exodus from Myanmar during a military crackdown described by the UN as ethnic cleansing. Recently, 50,000 to 60,000 Rohingya have illegally crossed into Bangladesh, presenting humanitarian challenges. Chowdhury emphasized the need for high-level government decisions on this issue, as many new arrivals are injured.
Addressing the drug trade along the border, Chowdhury described Teknaf and nearby areas as notorious for such activities. He urged local residents to collaborate with law enforcement by providing information to help combat the problem. Bangladesh’s engagement with Myanmar and the AA reflects a strategic approach to maintaining border security and addressing humanitarian concerns amidst ongoing regional tensions.
