Groundbreaking News: CM Champions Landmark Freedom of Religion Act for a Harmonious Future
ITANAGAR, 27 Dec: Chief Minister Pema Khandu has announced that the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978, which has remained inactive, will soon be operational with the formulation and implementation of its rules. Speaking at the silver jubilee of the Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP) at IG Park, Khandu credited former Chief Minister PK Thungon for the original enactment, aimed at preventing forced or fraudulent religious conversions.
Khandu noted that the Act, dormant until a recent Gauhati High Court directive, is set to be activated, with the rules currently being framed. This development is anticipated to bolster efforts in preserving the state’s indigenous cultures and faiths. He emphasized the intrinsic link between faith and culture, highlighting the necessity of their preservation amidst global cultural erosion. Despite modern challenges, Arunachal has successfully maintained its unique indigenous identity, largely attributed to the dedication of the IFCSAP and its volunteers.
Khandu paid homage to key figures in the preservation of indigenous cultures, including Golgi Bote late Talom Rukbo and others, acknowledging their pivotal contributions. The state government, recognizing the urgency of safeguarding indigenous traditions, established the Department of Indigenous Affairs in 2017. Khandu mentioned ongoing collaborations with IFCSAP and community-based organizations to support the preservation and promotion of local cultures, institutions, and languages.
Responding to requests from indigenous groups, Khandu revealed that steps are being taken to rename the Department of Indigenous Affairs to better reflect its mission. This strategic move underscores the state government’s commitment to protecting and nurturing Arunachal’s rich cultural heritage for future generations. (CM’s PR Cell)
