Devastating Loss: 17 Tripura Christian Homes Torched on Christmas Spark Outrage
In a devastating incident early on December 25, miscreants set fire to 17 homes in the Christian Tripura community of Sarai Union, located in Lama Upazila, Bandarban. The attack occurred while the villagers were attending nearby Christmas prayers, as their own village lacks a church. Consequently, no one was present in New Betachhara Para, allowing the perpetrators to act without interference.
The affected village, situated in Ward No. 8 of Sarai Union, had sent its residents to Tonggyajhiri village for Christmas celebrations. The attackers exploited this absence, igniting 17 out of the 19 houses in the village. Around 12:30 am, villagers noticed flames rising from their homes while they were at Tonggyajhiri and hurried back. Unfortunately, by the time they returned, the fire had already engulfed most of their homes.
Built primarily from bamboo and straw, the houses were highly flammable, causing them to be quickly reduced to ashes. This tragic event has left significant devastation in its wake, stripping the residents of their homes and community on what is traditionally a day of celebration.
This alarming attack on a religious minority community highlights ongoing concerns about safety and security in the region. The substantial loss underscores the vulnerability of villages during major celebrations, particularly when communities must travel to participate in religious observances.
Efforts are now focused on providing relief to the affected families and rebuilding their lives amidst the ruins of their village. Meanwhile, authorities are reportedly investigating the incident, seeking to apprehend those responsible and address security gaps to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
As this community recovers from the attack, the broader implications for their security and peace of mind remain a pressing concern for both local and national leaders.
