Shocking Horror: Guatemalan Migrant Arrested for Heinous Act of Immolation in New York Subway
In a shocking incident in Brooklyn, New York, a Guatemalan migrant has been arrested for allegedly setting a woman on fire in a subway, leading to her death. The crime occurred on the morning of December 23 on a train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station, as confirmed by New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Describing the act as “depraved,” Commissioner Tisch stated that the suspect used a lighter to ignite the victim’s clothing as she sat inside a subway car, resulting in her being engulfed in flames within seconds.
The NYPD patrol arrived swiftly, having noticed smoke, but despite extinguishing the flames, the woman succumbed at the scene. A horrifying video captured the suspect’s calm demeanor as the tragedy unfolded. The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta from Guatemala, had reportedly stayed on the scene, sitting on a nearby bench, which led to police apprehending him.
Zapeta’s identity was confirmed after three high school students recognized him from released images and tipped off the police. He was tracked down and arrested on another train at Herald Square while wearing the same attire—a grey hoodie and paint-splattered pants. A lighter was found in his possession at the time of arrest.
Authorities are investigating Zapeta’s legal status, as he was first detained by border patrol agents in Arizona in 2018. Commissioner Tisch praised the alertness and bravery of the students who helped in tracking down the suspect, emphasizing the importance of vigilant citizens in assisting law enforcement. This tragic event has left New Yorkers stunned and highlights ongoing concerns about safety in public transport systems.
