Guwahati: In a historic achievement, the North East Frontier Railway Sports Association (NFRSA) claimed their first Guwahati Premier League Football title by defeating Pride East Mavericks in a nail-biting final held at Judges Field on Sunday.
The intense match, played under vibrant floodlights despite the chilly conditions, concluded in a dramatic 7-6 victory for NFRSA through a penalty shootout. The game remained deadlocked in regulation time and after a tie-breaker, propelling the teams into a high-stakes penalty showdown.
NFRSA’s Sibra Narzary opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a precise header from a corner, giving his team a crucial edge. Despite relentless efforts from Pride East Mavericks, NFRSA maintained their narrow lead until half-time. In a nail-biting finish, Mavericks’ Amber Chetri scored a stunning equalizer in the 90+5 minute, leading the match into extra time.
During the penalty shootout, both teams matched each other goal for goal, converting five penalties each. Nevertheless, NFRSA clinched victory in sudden death, capitalizing on Mavericks’ missed attempt. The triumphant NFRSA squad celebrated their victory alongside a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh, whereas the valiant runners-up Pride East Mavericks walked away with Rs 7 lakh. Semi-finalists United Chirang Duar and FC Green Valley received Rs 1.5 lakh each.
The tournament also highlighted outstanding individual performances. Debjit Basak (NFRSA) was named Player of the Tournament, while Meghraj Basumatary from Pride East Mavericks bagged the Best Goalkeeper award. Sibra Narzary’s impactful presence earned him the Player of the Final title, and Samiran Goyari (ASEBSC) was honored as the Most Promising Player of the Meet.
This thrilling finale captivated fans and added a vibrant chapter to the sports landscape in Assam and the Northeast region.
