Power Shift: Fadnavis Retains Home, Shinde Triumphs with Urban Development, Ajit Pawar Commands Finance and Planning
In Maharashtra, the newly formed Mahayuti government, following the assembly elections, unveiled its cabinet portfolios. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis retained key departments like Home and Law and Judiciary, while Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was allocated Urban Development and Housing and Public Works. Ajit Pawar, another Deputy Chief Minister from the NCP, took charge of Finance, Planning, and Excise departments. The portfolio announcement, which comes after a week of government expansion and a month post-elections, includes 36 cabinet ministers and 6 Ministers of State. Notable allocations include Pankaja Munde with Environment, Climate Change, and Animal Husbandry, and Chandrakant Patil handling Higher Education and Parliamentary Affairs. The cabinet expanded on December 15 with 39 ministers sworn in, comprising leaders from the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP. The Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, clinched a landslide victory securing 235 assembly seats, with BJP as the largest party holding 132 seats. Shiv Sena and NCP also achieved substantial seats, obtaining 57 and 41 respectively. This coalition, comprising BJP, Eknath Shinde’s faction of the Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar-led NCP, marks a significant shift in Maharashtra’s political landscape.
