Breaking: Pakistan Forms Urgent Negotiation Committee with Imran Khan’s Party Amid Political Turmoil

The Pakistan government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has established a negotiation committee to engage in dialogue with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by the imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The move comes after PTI threatened to initiate a civil disobedience campaign. This government committee consists of prominent figures, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Foreign Minister Rana Sanaullah, among others.

PTI has responded positively, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue with defined timelines. The National Assembly Speaker, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, has offered to host these discussions, inviting both parties to meet in his parliament chambers.

PTI official Sheikh Waqas Akram accepted the speaker’s invitation, and their representatives are scheduled to meet on Monday. Discussions will update Khan, who will decide whether to halt the civil disobedience movement. The party had previously issued a call for civil disobedience if the government didn’t meet its demands by Sunday, which include releasing political prisoners and forming a judicial commission to investigate past events.

The push for dialogue is seen as crucial after PTI activist uprising on May 9, 2023, when military installations faced assault following Khan’s arrest. Subsequent to these events, Pakistan’s military courts sentenced 25 civilians to imprisonment for their involvement.

Throughout 2023 and into 2024, Khan’s supporters have consistently demanded his release. Khan, held in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail since August after his government was ousted in April 2022, remains a pivotal figure in the unfolding political narrative. The ongoing talks represent a potentially significant shift towards resolving political tensions through negotiation instead of confrontation.
