At the fifth edition of the IE Thinc: CITIES series, experts gathered to discuss the role of technology in urban planning and expansion in India. The event, hosted by The Indian Express and Omidyar Network India, was moderated by Udit Misra. Keshav Verma pointed out India’s underutilized urbanization potential, essential for achieving a $10 trillion economy. He emphasized upgrading municipal systems and using AI to improve traffic management and transparency. Professionalizing municipal corporations and technological innovations, like Lidar for water systems, were recommended for effective urban governance and financial efficiency.
Jagan Shah highlighted digital technology as crucial for city transformations in India, particularly under the Smart Cities Mission. He urged integrating technologies like remote sensing and GIS for better urban management and stressed the importance of private sector involvement to scale these innovations. Despite promising advancements, there remains a need to consolidate efforts for comprehensive growth.
Anupam Kumar Singh identified challenges in construction technology, advocating for sustainable building practices to enhance urbanization. The emphasis was on deploying technologies that reduce pollution and improve construction efficiency.
Shalini Agarwal linked India’s target to become a $30 trillion economy by 2047 to effective urban planning, emphasizing technology’s role in governance and public accessibility. She advocated for equipping urban bodies with technology to match urban growth.
Verma expressed concerns over the lack of professionals in city governance, calling for in-house capacity building to fully realize technology’s potential.
Jagan Shah added that technology is imperative for urban development, with innovations like digital twins and smart city command centers becoming pivotal. Despite existing inefficiencies, integrating and scaling technological solutions is key to sustainable urban development and improving the quality of life.
