Outrage Erupts: Intense Congress Protest Over Tragic Death Clashes with Police in Guwahati
In Guwahati, numerous Congress workers, including top state leaders such as Bhupen Kumar Borah and former president Ripun Bora, protested on Friday demanding a detailed inquiry into the death of a party worker, allegedly caused by tear gas inhalation during a prior demonstration. The protest resulted in clashes with law enforcement, who arrested several party members after they violated a restriction order prohibiting gatherings of more than five people without prior permission near the Dispur capital complex.
Indian Youth Congress national president Uday Bhanu Chib was detained preventively and allegedly held incommunicado at his hotel by unidentified individuals, according to a complaint made by advocate Reetam Singh at the Dispur police station. This raised concerns about threats to Chib’s safety and property. Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, accused the Congress leadership of attempting to incite violence in the city and stressed that political battles should be fought through elections, not agitation.
The Congress rally was proceeding from Hatigaon towards the Assam state secretariat when it was stopped approximately 4 km from the complex. Meanwhile, the Youth Congress initiated a separate march from their city office, breaching police barriers and shouting slogans against the ruling BJP government. They were halted by the police and conducted a sit-in protest on the road.
These protests followed earlier rallies by the Congress demanding a proper investigation into the demise of a worker named Islam, leading up to a multi-faith prayer meeting at the party’s city office. Congress leaders insisted that their intent was not to provoke unrest during the demonstration.
The situation in Guwahati remains tense as Congress members continue to push for answers while clashing with local law enforcement, spotlighting a contentious political landscape in the region.
