Exciting Breakthrough: Mizoram Minister Unveils Revolutionary Aeroponic Potato Seed Unit!
Mizoram’s Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister, PC Vanlalruata, recently inaugurated an innovative aeroponic system of potato seed production in the Thingdawl area of Kolasib district. This groundbreaking method allows for potato seed cultivation without the use of soil, relying instead on a system that nourishes the plants through mists of water and nutrients. Developed by the state’s agriculture department with full funding from the North Eastern Council (NEC), the project addresses the pressing issue of potato seed shortages faced by local farmers during planting seasons.
Deputy Director of the department, Samuel Lalliansanga, emphasized the project’s potential to produce approximately 2.5 lakh mini tuber seeds per season, which could total up to 5 lakh annually if run for two seasons. This method not only ensures healthier seeds but also maximizes output in restricted spaces by utilizing less soil. The project involves processing potato plants in a tissue culture lab before transferring them to the aeroponic unit, where their roots are suspended and nurtured via spray machines.
Blue Stallion Equipment (P) Ltd., based in Ludhiana, undertook the project at an estimated cost of Rs.198 lakh. Presently, about 90% of potatoes consumed in Mizoram are imported from outside the state, highlighting the significance of this local production initiative in enhancing self-sufficiency and reducing dependency on external sources.
The introduction of the aeroponic system is anticipated to revolutionize potato farming in the region, offering a sustainable solution to meet the agricultural needs of Mizoram by boosting local economies and empowering farmers.
