Urgent Call: Sikkim MP Fights for Lifeline to Endangered Languages as UGC Funding Faces Crisis
GANGTOK: In a bid to safeguard the linguistic heritage of the Eastern Himalayas, Sikkim’s Lok Sabha MP, Indra Hang Subba, met with Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, the Minister of State for Education, in New Delhi on December 18. The focal point of their discussion was the pressing need for financial support to sustain the Centre for Endangered Languages (CEL) at Sikkim University. During the meeting, MP Subba formally requested the release of funds, emphasizing CEL’s pivotal role since its inception in 2016 under the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The Centre has been instrumental in the documentation and preservation of several endangered languages indigenous to the region, including Bhujel, Magar, Gurung, Sherpa, and Rai-Rokdung. Among its notable achievements, the Centre has established the Sikkim-Darjeeling Himalayas Endangered Languages Archive (SiDHELA). This archive stands as India’s pioneering repository exclusively dedicated to endangered languages, aiming to ensure the preservation of these cultural assets for the benefit of future generations.
