Shocking Discovery: Myanmar National Caught Smuggling Four Precious De Brazza’s Monkeys!
In a strategic joint operation conducted in Champhai, Mizoram, the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Forest Department successfully rescued four De Brazza’s monkeys from illegal trafficking. These rare primates were apprehended near Zokhawthar, close to the Indo-Myanmar border. According to the Assam Rifles’ statement, the exotic animals have an estimated worth of Rs 60 lakh in the international grey market.
Acting on intelligence reports, troops set up a precise ambush and intercepted a trafficker attempting to smuggle the monkeys across the border. The individual detained for smuggling was a 40-year-old Myanmar national named Lalchhanhim. Authorities have transferred both the suspect and the rescued animals to the Forest Department in Champhai to facilitate further investigation and legal proceedings.
This successful operation underscores the heightened vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement and conservation agencies to combat the illegal wildlife trade. It also highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in protecting endangered species in the Northeast region.
