Heartbreaking Tragedy: Mother and Daughter Perish as Car Plunges into Barak River
In a tragic accident near Roypur in Borkhola constituency of Cachar district, a 21-year-old woman and her 13-month-old daughter lost their lives after their vehicle plunged into the Barak River. The incident occurred on Tuesday night, just 13 kilometers away from their home in Buribail. The family was returning from Silchar, where they had gone for a medical consultation.
The driver, Rois Uddin Barbhuiya, 24, who is from Buribail, lost control of the vehicle due to heavy fog at around midnight, leading to the accident. Although Barbhuiya managed to escape through the car’s broken windscreen, his wife, Heli Begum Barbhuiya, and their daughter, Jannat, remained trapped inside the submerged car and tragically drowned.
Following the accident, Barbhuiya’s cries for help alerted local villagers, who promptly informed the authorities. Superintendent of Police (Cachar) Numal Mahatta, along with a police team and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, arrived at the scene. The dense fog and darkness initially hampered efforts to pinpoint the exact location where the vehicle sank.
By Wednesday morning, after a concerted effort by the SDRF team and local residents, both the bodies and the vehicle were recovered from the river. The deceased were subsequently taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem. Barbhuiya is currently receiving medical treatment at the same hospital, and the police have initiated legal proceedings in the aftermath of the accident.
This incident underscores the dangers of driving under adverse weather conditions and highlights the need for caution and awareness to prevent such tragedies in the future.
