Grand Reopening: Dimapur Town Hall Shines After Spectacular Rs 19 Crore Renovation
Morung Express News Dimapur | December 17
The Town Hall in Dimapur, originally constructed in the mid-1980s, has undergone a significant transformation. The newly renovated 400-seater facility now boasts a modern façade, plush interiors complete with reclining chairs, acoustic panels, a state-of-the-art sound system, a digital projector, and a centralized air conditioning system. Its facilities have expanded to include a green room and upgraded washrooms, marking a stark improvement from its previously dilapidated state.
The renovation project, commissioned by the Development Authority of Nagaland (DAN), incurred a projected cost of Rs 19.9 crore, funded primarily through the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment, which contributed Rs 15.73 crore. The state government added Rs 2 crore, with a total fund allocation of Rs 17.73 crore, of which Rs 16.91 crore had been disbursed to the contractor.
The renovation, executed by M/s Chabou & Co, began in June 2023 and was completed by December 10, 2024, six months behind schedule. This delay was attributed to several factors, including redesign efforts to incorporate tribal motifs on the façade and modifications to accommodate the additional load these changes imposed. The project had to reinforce two front columns to ensure structural stability.
During the inaugural ceremony on December 17, graced by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and other legislators, the renovations were lauded for their exceptional quality, aligning with national and international standards. Initially, there were plans to demolish the old structure, but assessments deemed it suitable for renovation, especially given constraints on space for expansion.
To ensure sustainable management, Neiphiu Rio proposed forming a management committee under DAN’s oversight, including representatives from the district administration, municipal council, and local civil society entities. He stressed the urgent need for adequate upkeep of public infrastructure in Nagaland, emphasizing repurposing underutilized DAN personnel for maintenance duties.
