Urgent Action: Sikkim Health Department Rallies to Combat Hepatitis ‘A’ Outbreak in Gangtok
In response to a surge in Hepatitis ‘A’ cases in Sikkim, particularly in Gangtok and its surrounding areas, the state’s health department has implemented urgent measures to combat the outbreak. Since December 1, 33 cases have been reported at STNM Hospital and CRH, prompting health authorities to take immediate action.
On December 17, 2024, a high-level meeting led by the Chief Secretary outlined strategies to prevent further spread and protect public health. Key initiatives include contact tracing and monitoring of individuals exposed to the infection. The Health Department will also launch a public awareness campaign to educate residents on the prevention, symptoms, and treatment of Hepatitis ‘A’.
In addition, authorities will inspect local eateries such as hotels, restaurants, and fast-food outlets to ensure compliance with hygiene and sanitation standards. The R.D.D and P.H.E Departments are tasked with sampling and testing local water sources for contamination, suspected to be a primary cause of the outbreak.
The health department advises the public to take preventive measures: boil water for at least 10 minutes or use purified water, wash hands regularly with the SUMAN-K method, avoid consuming street food, and thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables with hot water.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant for symptoms like jaundice, dark urine, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite, and to seek immediate medical attention if these arise. Early diagnosis and treatment are emphasized as crucial steps in managing Hepatitis ‘A’.
Health authorities highlight the significance of public awareness and adherence to safety measures in curbing the outbreak. By maintaining vigilance and following preventive guidelines, the community can help prevent further spread and ensure public health safety.
