Guwahati: The deteriorating state of Guwahati’s roads has become a significant concern for locals, who encounter daily challenges navigating streets riddled with potholes and makeshift repairs. The city’s infrastructure development suffers due to inadequate long-term planning and poor-quality construction. Roads resemble a haphazard mix of bitumen and concrete, highlighting the inefficiencies plaguing construction and maintenance processes.
A resident from GMCH Road expressed frustration, noting that the uneven streets not only damage vehicles but also increase travel time and discomfort. Public Works Department (PWD) officials acknowledge that funding delays and resource shortages contribute to these issues. Many contractors have yet to receive estimates, forcing compromises on materials and workmanship.
Experts stress the need for comprehensive planning in road construction, including considerations for load-bearing capacity, drainage, and durability. Unfortunately, these aspects are often neglected in Guwahati, as scientific methods and execution are misaligned. Monsoon rains worsen the situation, weakening road structures and exacerbating damage due to ineffective drainage.
Citizens argue that the city’s growth and quality of life are hampered by these deteriorating conditions. Roads are crucial to a city’s infrastructure, and without proper development, Guwahati risks falling behind in terms of progress and liveability. Despite promises from authorities, no substantial actions have been taken to resolve these ongoing issues. Residents remain frustrated, awaiting systemic reforms to transform assurances into concrete measures.
