Jasprit Bumrah’s Phenomenal Triumph: Surpasses Zaheer & Ishant to Claim No. 2 Spot in Legendary List Topped by Kapil Dev!
Jasprit Bumrah Shines with Five-Wicket Haul at The Gabba, Climbs to No. 2 on Elite List
In a standout performance during the second day of the third Test between India and Australia at The Gabba in Brisbane, Jasprit Bumrah claimed five wickets for 72 runs in 25 overs, advancing his career tally to 12 five-wicket hauls in Test cricket. With this achievement, Bumrah surpasses renowned Indian pacers Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma, who each have 11 five-wicket hauls, solidifying his position as one of India’s top bowlers.
Bumrah’s latest effort places him second in the list of Indian pacers with the most five-wicket hauls, behind only Kapil Dev’s record of 23. Additionally, Bumrah became the first Indian to secure eight five-wicket hauls in the SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia), surpassing Kapil Dev’s previous best of seven.
On Sunday, Bumrah’s impressive spell began with the dismissal of Usman Khawaja, followed by Nathan McSweeney, Steve Smith, Mitchell Marsh, and Travis Head—all pivotal players in Australia’s lineup. His performance also brings him level with Anil Kumble for India’s most Test wickets in Australia at 49. Bumrah is inching closer to breaking Kapil Dev’s record of 51 wickets in Australia.
Moreover, Bumrah’s outstanding contribution in the World Test Championship (WTC) series matches that of Australian captain Pat Cummins, with each having nine five-wicket hauls. This accomplishment places Bumrah just behind Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (11) and Australian spinner Nathan Lyon (10) for the most five-wicket hauls in the WTC.
So far in 2024, Bumrah has dismissed 58 batters in 12 Tests, putting him in contention to become the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing 2023-25 WTC series. Currently, he trails Ashwin by just one wicket, who leads with 63 dismissals in 14 matches.
